Re: [VWoT] My Tranny is fucked need help!

d'oh! now's the time to learn how to shift without a clutch! i've done it many a time now, and
it works just fine.

that's an oddly named town.

sounds like a couple of possibilities. but i'm thinking that the most likely culprit is the
little nub on the clutch release plate. when you installed the tranny, did you put a little
grease on it?

it's still 40ft in the air, and needs to be slammed. that's the problem. your car is too high!

did it make a crunchy noise, accompanied by a shudder thru the car? if so, then i think that
sorta strengthens my belief that it's the clutch release plate.

oh yeah, you totally could driven home without the clutch. next time you'll know better.

i think that the 200 and 210mm clutches are interchangeable. the problem is when you try and use
an 8V clutch in a 16V tranny, or vice versa. that way you'll end up with a car that will only
just barely move forward before making a hideous grinding sound.

i unfortunately can't give you details, but one of the easiest ways is to drop the entire motor
and do it all out of the car. of course, make sure that you have all the tools that are required.
some that i can think of off the top of my head:

-10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 17, 18, 19mm sockets (in various 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" sizes)
-the same metric-sized wrenches
-a metric hex set
-a 12pt driveshaft tool (i *think* that it's 8mm, but it could be 9mm or 10mm as well)
-a 30mm socket for removing the drive axle completely (i like to, most people don't)
-a 12pt 9mm socket for taking the 9 flywheel bolts out
-a pair of needle-nose pliars for taking the release-plate hold-down spring out
-assorted flat-blade and phillips' screwdrivers

and for re-assembly, your best bet is to use a
-clutch-centering tool that normally comes in the valeo clutch kit. some people prefer not to use
it, but i think it makes things a lot easier
-a torque wrench, or two if you can get em (one that does up to 25ft-lb, and the other that does
up to 250ft-lb
-bentley manual for torque specs

can anyone else fill in some of the gaps that i may have missed?

keep in mind that there is an 11mm bolt (although i have seen an instance where a large phillips'
screw was used) that holds the speedo gear in place, and there is a big ol' ground wire connected
to the tranny that needs to be disconnected. also, two of the shifter linkage rods will need to
be popped off.

> Hope someone can help me out, well I make my self dinner.

best of luck to ya, guy. some people i know can do this job in less than 2 hours. it takes me a
bare minimum of 2 just to get the tranny out.

HTH!
