Well this is my specialty. Am I the only one here certified for e-test
inspector and repair tech??? ...
Usually a car that idles really good is running on the rich side... As
for
failing HC and NOx, well overadvanced ignition timing will rise those two.
Usually on VWs I find the idle mixture screw is set out of whack (people
think they gain power by richening the idle mixture - incorrect! Or they
have leaking injector o-rings so they need to crank it in for it to run
decent but it affects other things), the ignition timing is off or it has a
slow responding or dead oxygen sensor.. Those 3 things would be the ones to
check/set.
What were the results and what were the limits?
Kreso
Okay, first, I don't have a timing light, so I'll have to borrow one if
that's a likely suspect. Not sure why it would change from where it was set.
O rings are quite new, say, two years old. I've got no indication there's
any leakage there.
O2 sensor, I'll give it another check. (I think I checked its voltage a
month or two back, but the DPR current fluctuates nicely, that's a good
sign, right?) It got changed last time I did this fucking test. Happy
Birthday, you get to buy more car parts. And pardon my french.
The previous cat had become quite blocked, which is why its housing's all
that remains of it now. Which was caused by overly rich condition, as set by
the dealer when the engine was first done, back in the days before I used a
wrench. As if I can use one now anyways.
I'd say the mix is actually on the lean side at the moment. It runs well
enough at the current setting, I messed with it to knock down HC, I guess
that didn't work.
So 2525:
HC 135 148 Fail
CO% 0.76 0.73
NO 1553 2373 Fail
RPM 2194
dilution 14.8
Curb idle:
HC 300 160
CO % 1.50 0.47
NO N/A N/A
RPM 1059
Dilution 14.7
So, any hope it'll pass without a cat? What are the odds? Any other tircks I
can try? I'm guessing CR is pretty high on this one, there was some material
removed when the head was done.
Thanks, I just hate this , I've got a total gas guzzler that passes easily,
and this one that always has some issue, even when it's running well.
(finally after a whole summer of poopoo running) One more time after this,
thank goodness. Sorry Kreso, I just view it as a hassle and an expense,
especially with three diesels in the fleet. At least they'll pass.
But any input is appreciated.
Cathy
