I had a problem with my 02 WRX. The tranny started whining at
99,900kms (they have a 100K drive-train warranty).
I had to show proof of my services (which was a bit tricky because I
was the 2nd owner) and warranty doesn't cover neglect. They did put a
new tranny in under warranty.
Subaru has a coolant additive that's suppose to "help" with the head
gasket issue and its also supposed to provide lubrication for the
coolant pump.
After much research, I also decided to use VW red coolant (phosphate
free, and Porsche uses it too just a different bottle) and distilled
water and I also used Subaru's coolant additive.
Another very common problem that my 02 WRX had was the occasional
smell of gasoline (once a week or so) from the vents when the car was
cold. There was a service bulletin but unfortunately it didn't cover
my car. The fix was very easy and all it required was a new washer on
the fuel rail.
As soon as one of our cars dies we will be buying a Subaru.
